Webb Ellis Trophy display
The Webb Ellis trophy that will be awarded to the team crowned Rugby World Champions at Twickenham on the last day of October, will be on display here at the College between 6.30 and 7.30 pm on Wednesday 2 September.
Only world champions may touch the hallowed trophy, but this will be a wonderful chance for rugby fans from around Eastbourne to see it, learn about its history and be photographed alongside it. This is the first of a number of events to welcome the South African Rugby team to Eastbourne College which has been chosen to be the Springboks’ Team Base.
Headmaster Simon Davies said: “We decided to bid with the University of Brighton to be a Rugby World Cup Team Base because we believed it would benefit the whole town of Eastbourne to play a part in this global event. People from across Eastbourne have, by working together, made Eastbourne the number one choice for teams in Pool B and it is very exciting that the pool’s highest ranked team, South Africa, is therefore to be based in Eastbourne and training on our pitches. It is a great privilege, too.
One of the reasons the Springboks are coming to Eastbourne College is our outstanding outdoor sporting facilities. The tourists will also be able to see the work that has just started on Project 150, a £33 million redevelopment over 1.4 acres at the centre of the College which will include state-of-the-art indoor sports facilities and much more. It is scheduled to open in 2017 to coincide with the College’s 150th anniversary and we are confident that it will be the cornerstone in the College’s plans to be a centre of excellence for all its major sports.”
