Speech Day 2016
Despite concerns about thunderstorms and torrential rain, the Eastbourne College community was blessed with warm temperatures and bright sunshine for Speech Day 2016 on Saturday 2 July.
At 10.00am the whole school gathered at All Saints’ Church for the final service of the academic year. Pupils and staff were joined by the parents of upper sixth leavers, choir and orchestra members and together they enjoyed some wonderful singing from both the choir and the congregation.
After coffee and pastries in the Dining Hall, everyone made their way to the Eastbourne Winter Garden where they were joined by family and friends of all College pupils for the annual prizegiving and speeches. A number of academic prizes were presented to delighted recipients and two special prizes were awarded – the Tom Lewis Memorial prize was presented to Year 9 pupil Zara Lawson Johnston and the John Le Brocq Memorial prize was presented to Year 13 leaver Fergus Piper.
Departing Heads of School, Jaspal Singh and Tianyu Wang opened the speeches, followed by Vice-Chairman of Governors, Philip Broadley. Simon Davies brought the formal part of the day to a close with a heartfelt address and farewell message to the College community.
On leaving the Winter Garden everyone made their way to College Field for an afternoon of relaxed celebration. Pupils and parents gathered in house groups for refreshments and picnics whilst enjoying entertainment provided by College musicians. During the afternoon various events and exhibitions of pupils' work were open for visitors across the College.
Speech Day 2016 was once again a tremendously special occasion for all involved. Pupils, parents, staff and friends gathered to celebrate a year of outstanding successes and to look forward to an exciting period for the College as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2017.
