Madison Keys visits Eastbourne College and St Andrew’s Prep
Thank you to Madison Keys, defending women’s singles champion at the Rothesay International Eastbourne Tennis tournament, for a wonderful Q&A session with top squad players from Eastbourne College and St Andrew’s Prep yesterday. The exciting opportunity for the pupils was filmed by BBC TV on Eastbourne College grounds overlooking the tournament and is provisionally scheduled to be shown on BBC TV before Madison’s first match on Wednesday.
The pupils’ questions were wide and varied with Madison happy to discuss topics including match pressure, nutrition and the advice she would give her 14-year-old self if she had had the opportunity. The world no 12 also talked about her Kindness Wins Initiative with the mission to support children’s access to sport and education and to be kind, always.
St Andrew’s Prep pupils, Katie and Sienna, who claimed the U13 IAPS national title last week said they were “amazed” by the World No 12’s visit, while Becky, Annabel and Selena from Eastbourne College said they were “really motivated” by the session ahead of their journey to the U18 National championships today to represent the school. Eastbourne College pupil Nazarii was also thrilled by Madison’s visit and was especially interested in the technical advice she offered.
Eastbourne College Headmaster, Tom Lawson, was also interviewed by former player turned BBC commentator, Sam Smith, and he talked about the link between Madison’s Kindness Wins Initiative and the school’s own values, and he mentioned his pride in the College pupils who are an integral part of the ball crew at the Rothesay Tournament.
Good luck Madison as you defend your title here in Eastbourne and thank you for coming to see us.
