Headmaster’s commendations May 2017
The Headmaster is pleased to commend the following pupils:
Amelia Allen (Captain), Year 13 School, Ellie Dasent, Year 11 Nugent, Valentina Khalturina, Year 11 Nugent, and Ines Pelvang, Year 12 School, for their excellent performance in winning the U18 Girls schools’ tennis County title. They came through a strong field of schools, defeating the holders Bede’s in the semi-final and Brighton College in the final. All 4 girls are to be commended on their determination and teamwork under pressure in the knockout rounds. Their positive play and support for each other was noted by a number of people watching. This is the first time Eastbourne College has won this title.
Abi Taylor-Hall, Year 12 Watt, for her initiative, contribution, helpful and proactive approach to charitable and voluntary activities during her injury time this year. This has included raising over £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust, through the College’s ‘no phone day’ in February, taking a major part in organising the Watt House Dinner last term and stepping up and volunteering to help in the House. Abi’s willingness to help, her positive attitude and care for others is something to commend.
Hugh Turnbull, Year 13 Pennell, and Tom Wane, Year 13 Gonville, who were selected for the England U18 Counties squad to face Ireland U18 Clubs over the Easter holidays. Both boys showed great determination and persistence to get selected through Sussex, London and SE, and then England. One of the England coaches described Hugh as ‘showing extraordinary maturity in dealing with the difficult situation of his serious injury in the training camp. He very much deserved his England selection’. Tom was described as having ‘played superbly and his class shone through starting both Test Matches for England vs Ireland. He is rated very highly.’ Eastbourne College has produced two excellent rugby players but, as ever, produced two excellent people.
