Fives teams excel again
On Saturday 8 February the boys’ U18 and U16 fives teams travelled to Whitgift School to compete in the Rugby Fives South Eastern Schools Championship.
The two seniors, Joe Leale-Green and Philip Teterin, played exceptionally well. In the Senior Singles competition both boys qualified for the semi-finals by winning their respective group stages (each winning his four games comfortably). Both semi-finals were Eastbourne v Whitgift affairs. Joe won a very hard-fought game, 11–9, while Philip lost to the no.1 seed 11–6. Joe went on to play a very clever, tactical final and won through 11–6.
In the doubles competition Joe and Philip had an easy route into the final where they came up against a hard-hitting Tonbridge 1st pair. The Eastbourne boys started the final very sluggishly and found themselves 2–8 down, but managed to pick up their game just in time and came through as 11–9 winners. Thus Eastbourne was able to retain both senior cups won last year by Chay Kent and Dominic Barnes.
In the junior competition Ed Towey and George Williams, who both improved significantly during the course of the day, made it into the doubles plate final against Tonbridge II. This was a closely fought match which could have gone either way, but Ed and George held firm to finish as winners with a score of 11–7.
