Chemistry conference
Last week, twenty pupils had the opportunity to travel to London to attend a Chemistry conference, where they heard five renowned chemists talk about their fields within the subject.
Among the speakers was Dr Peter Wothers, from the University of Cambridge, who gave a wonderful talk on the phenomenon of when matter meets electromagnetic radiation, Dr Nick Lane who spoke about DNA focussing on the origin of life and the origin and evolution of eukaryotes and Professor Lucy Carpenter who is an Atmospheric Chemist, specialising in the chemistry of the clean marine atmosphere and in natural emissions of volatile organic compounds.
The pupils were fortunate to listen to such eminent scientists and interestingly Professor Carpenter was awarded the Royal Society’s Rosalind Franklin Award in 2015 for her scientific achievement.
