Sussex tennis champions
The Eastbourne College U15 girls tennis team (Eliza Houchin, Valentina Khalturina (Cpt), Isabel McIntosh and Annie Wilson) was victorious in the recent Sussex Shield event, bringing home the prestigious county title to the College for the very first time.
The impressive Sussex Shield (pictured here with the team) dates back to 1953 and this year’s victory by Eastbourne illustrates the growing strength of girls’ tennis at the College.
The girls swept all before them, scoring impressive victories against a number of other Sussex schools – Bedes, Brighton College, Moira House, Worth and finally Millais School in a close final.
It is never easy to bring home the gold medal in a competitive one-day event where you have to play a number of matches against strong opponents, but the Eastbourne College girls exhibited no shortage of skill, determination and that crucial ingredient of spirited team play to finish in first place.
The team has the chance to ‘do the double’ next week when they play Hurstpierpoint College in the final of the AEGON LTA U15 County League with the winner going on to represent Sussex in the regional stage of this national schools’ competition next term.
