Rocket science
On 2 September 2015, two kilograms of rocket seed (Eruca sativa) travelled from Baikonur, Kazakhstan on the Soyuz 44S rocket to the International Space Station (ISS). The seeds were stored in microgravity by UK astronaut Tim Peake before they returned to earth in the spring of 2016.
Eastbourne College Year 10 pupils are looking at the germination and growth of a sample of the seeds that have been in microgravity compared with another sample that have been stored on earth. This national experiment will last for six weeks and the data collected will help scientists discover whether it is possible to grow our own food on other planets millions of miles from earth.
