Gonville Challenge
Over the final weekend of the Easter holiday, the boys and staff of Gonville House challenged themselves to walk 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne along the South Downs Way in just 48 hours. They were raising funds for two excellent charities – Macmillan Cancer Support and Project 150.
With senior boys walking for 12 hours each and junior boys walking 6-hour shifts, the Gonville House Challenge team walked day and night to complete the 100 miles in just 44 hours.
They were accompanied at all times by at least two members of house staff.
In total 38 boys and 14 staff took part in the walk. For the final leg from Birling Gap to the Western Lawns on Eastbourne seafront, the number of walkers rose to over 70 as the boys were joined by families and friends of Gonville.
The event was a massive physical, mental and logistical undertaking and a real challenge, that focused body, mind and soul. All those who took part were a credit to themselves, their house and the College. Most said it was the hardest thing they have ever done!
The whole Gonville Team would like to thank all those who have gave up their time, energy and money to support this challenge.
As this report is written, the total raised (including Gift Aid) is close to £16,000.
