Concrete progress
A stream of lorries have been arriving at regular intervals this week to deliver the concrete for the link transfer slab that joins the sports hall to the classroom block. Once this is in place, work can begin on the next two storeys to form the link corridors and six classrooms.
There is about 190 tonnes of concrete in this slab – approximately 15 lorry loads. Cubes of the concrete are made in moulds which are stored in a warm water tank for a few days. These concrete cubes are then tested by being crushed to determine the strength of the concrete – usually at seven and then 28 days.
Once it is judged that the concrete on the link has gained enough strength the formwork currently in place beneath the slab will be removed.
