Young craftsman
Three Eastbourne College pupils received awards at the recent South of England Show Young Craftsman of the Year competition.
Congratulations to Oli Akdeniz who was placed third in the wood section, Galina Lyubimova who was placed third in the DT section and Elizabeth Gower who received a commendation in the DT Section.
Oli was commissioned to design an item of outdoor seating which was to be located under the shade of an isolated tree in the middle of an expansive garden. Oli’s design circles the tree so that users can seek shade wherever the sun is located. The judge commented: ‘The design demonstrates a good understanding of basic structural principles and integrity. Superb work.’
Galina, whose home is Moscow, researched her project by visiting the Bang & Olufsen showroom in Eastbourne to explore the product range and target market. For her design she was inspired by Japanese design ideas to produce complex three-dimensional forms. This stretched her acrylic manufacturing experience to the limit but the judges were impressed with her ambition and skill.
Elizabeth was commissioned to design a sculptural bird bath. After much research and experimentation Elizabeth perfected the art of casting concrete and impressed everyone with her first experience of raising copper in order to manufacture the dish.
