National Youth Orchestra
Nick Atkins, Year 12 Powell, has been awarded a highly coveted place in the 2015 National Youth Orchestra of Great Britian (NYO).
The NYO is world-renowned and widely regarded as a pinnacle of artistic achievement by young players of outstanding vitality and ability. It includes young instrumentalists from every region in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. During their time with the orchestra they will work at an exceptional level with their peers, performing in the UK’s finest concert halls, under the world’s leading conductors.
This year 750 young people auditioned for a place in the 2015 NYO but only 85 female and 78 male musicians were selected. Nick is clearly a talented young man who has worked hard to reach this very high level of musical achievement.
The first performances of the newly-cast orchestra will take place in Leeds Town Hall on 3 January and the Barbican, London on 4 January. The programme will include Elgar’s Symphony No. 1, widely considered the first great British symphony, alongside Bach’s richly imaginative Fantasia and Fugue in C minor and Respighi’s impressionistic and colourful Pines of Rome.
Rounding off their first residency of the year will be a three-day stay at Highbury Grove School, a music specialist comprehensive school in Islington, London.
