Book publication
English and Religious Studies teacher Dr Daniel Gabelman has just had a book published about the fairy tales of George MacDonald, a Scottish writer in the Victorian period who was extremely well-known in his time. MacDonald was a pastor and lived in various places in Sussex throughout his life including Arundel and Hastings.
MacDonald was extremely influential on numerous 20th century writers such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and W. H. Auden and his fairy tales are remarkable for their wit, grace and beauty. In his book, Dr Gabelman argues that there is a strong case to be made for MacDonald being the greatest writer of original fairy tales in English and that the playfulness of MacDonald’s fairy tales was not just for a bit of fun but was also a light hearted way of exploring weighty philosophical and theological ideas such as love, death, hope and joy.
