Charity donation April 2013
Following the success of the Blackwater House fundraising efforts in 2012 for the JPK project (a local charity which seeks to provide residential accommodation for adults with learning difficulties), the girls and staff were keen to support another Sussex-based charity at their 2013 House Concert.
Raystede Animal Sanctuary in Eastbourne rescues, rehomes and provides sanctuary for more than 1500 animals each year. It has been caring for animals for sixty years but, as a registered charity, it relies entirely on voluntary donations. Once the initial link was made by Elizabeth, Head of House, it became clear that the bond between the animal sanctuary and Eastbourne College was stronger than originally thought in that three of the Raystede directors are in fact Old Eastbournians – one was even a pupil in Blackwater.
Blackwater was delighted to raise £300 for the charity and last week the girls welcomed a representative from Raystede for tea in the house…a 90 year old tortoise called Megan, who seemed to love all the attention as she calmly ate her way through a lettuce leaf or two in front of a rapt audience!
